Kylie Adams-Collier

Montevideo Maru 1942

from the Little Stone album.

Kylie penned her tribute after visiting the Australian War Memorial in 2015 with her son. They found a Montevideo Maru exhibit mentioning Kylie’s grandfather, Harry Adams as one of the civilians who drowned on the POW ship.

After recording with LINDSAY WADDINGTON early 2017, Kylie attended a Papua New Guinea Association of Australia AGM. As fate would have it, she was invited to perform her song, ‘MONTEVIDEO MARU 1942’, at the 75th Anniversary services in Rabaul, 22 June 2017 and at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on 1 July 2017.

The unmarked Japanese prison ship, Montevideo Maru, was sunk by an American submarine off the Philippines on July 1, 1942 and more than 1000 Australian soldiers and civilians perished. It remains Australia's worst - and least known - maritime disaster.
