Brokedown Palace

from the CD Single.

“After arriving in Australia in 1983 I enjoyed many wonderful years playing, recording, and touring as a drummer, among other things, with artists such as Graeme Connors, Slim Dusty, The Bushwackers, Troy Cassar-Daley, Anne Kirkpatrick, The Whitlams, Colin Buchanan, 1927, Savage Garden and Tim Finn. I am a 2-time Golden Guitar winner with THE FLYING EMUS, am ARIA nominated for I TURN TO TOMORROW (Silverchair) and am in the National Archive for, I SEE RED, my 2010 Australian Election parody”.

“A few years back I returned to my birthland of New York USA to care for my aging Dad and, to care for myself, I turned to the feel-good music of my youth and the incredibly rich songbook of the Grateful Dead, learning to strum the guitar and breathe life into these stories. As the Grateful Dead prepared for their 50yr reunion I received the news that THE FLYING EMUS were going to do a few shows to commemorate our 30th reunion.

I was especially keen to hear how one of the Hunter-Garcia ballads would sound in the hands of these amazing story singers. BROKEDOWN PALACE is a song of passion, depth and metaphor from which each person will harvest their own meaning. After presenting the song the previous evening we came into the studio the next AM and “pushed red” and this is the result.
