Runaway Dixie

The Gallows Tree

from the Breakdown album.

The Gallows Tree is the new single release for RUNAWAY DIXIE and is an original song written by JAMES YATES along with JIM and VIRGINIA HERMEL. In the year 1850, 24 year old James Yates was hanged at Adelaide jail for the murder of a shepherd, John Mansforth, at Skillogalee Creek, in the Clare Valley of South Australia. The night before he was hanged, James wrote a poignant poem lamenting his actions and the fact that his tender parents would never have thought he would die on the gallows tree. The award winning songwriting team of Jim and Virginia Hermel took James’ poem, added extra lyrics and created a melody, the result being a tragic lament….“The Gallows Tree….”, a true story from Australia’s early history. The track is another release from the new Runaway Dixie Breakdown album which was released in August.
